Japan Now modern japanese performing arts festival
has made it aim to support contemporary Japanese art in Euope. It offers a platform for performance, dance, theatre, and fine arts with the inclusion of Japanese artists living in Europe.
The diverse contemporary art scene of Japan is scarcely known in Europe. It is difficult for Japanese artists to establish themselves in Europe, not only due to the language barrier, but also due to the dominating clichés about traditional Japan. Japan Now has been working successfully for a couple of years now for a growing interest in and awareness of Japanese Modernity in Europe.
Japan Now is not simply about the presentation of foreign productions, but about intercultural collaboration. Audience discussions with translators, workshops in which the Japanese artists can teach their techniques, and panels stimulate the dialogue and mutual understanding between artists and audience, Japan and Europe.

Zeitgenössisches Tanz, Theater und Performance Festival
In Japan gibt es eine sehr breitgefächerte zeitgenössische Kunstszene, die sowohl bildende als auch darstellende Künste umfasst. Diese Szene, die sich nicht nur mit Klischees und Traditionen auseinandersetzt, ist in Europa kaum bekannt. Es ist schwierig für sie sich in Europa zu etablieren, zum Einen wegen sprachlicher und kultureller Unterschiede, zum Anderen wegen immer noch in Europa vorherrschender Klischees über das traditionelle Japan.
Das Festival „Japan Now“ wurde von dem Theater- und Festivaldirektor Shigeo Makabe aus Tokio und dem Berner Butohtänzer und Choreografen Imre Thormann initiiert, um die unterschiedlichsten Formen zeitgenössischer japanischer Kunst in Europa zu zeigen.
In diesem Jahr präsentieren wir „Japan Now“ zum dritten Mal. Veranstaltungsorte sind Bern, Berlin und Krakau. Ganz besonders freut es uns, dass wir dieses Jahr (2005), zusammen mit den Gruppen aus Tokio, auch in Europa lebende KünstlerInnen miteinbeziehen konnten.

Festiwal współczesnego japońskiego teatru i tańca.
Współczesną sztukę japońską cechuje duża różnorodność. Jednak stereotypy i klisze dotyczące Japonii, wciąż głęboko zakorzenione w kulturze europejskiej, a także różnice wynikające z odmienności języków i tradycji, powodują niezrozumienie i często znikome zainteresowanie japońską sceną artystyczną.
Celem festiwalu “Japan Now”, zainicjowanego przez Shigeo Makabe (reżysera teatralnego z Tokio) i Imre Thormanna (choreografa i tancerza butoh z Bernu), jest zaprezentowanie współczesnej sztuki japońskiej na gruncie europejskim i odnalezienie tym samym punktów stycznych pomiędzy dwoma, oddalonymi od siebie geograficznie i kulturowo kontynentami.
Tegoroczna, trzecia edycja festiwalu, odbędzie się w trzech miastach Europy: Bernie, Berlinie i Krakowie. Swoje pracę zaprezentują artyści żyjący w Japonii, jak również Japończycy, którzy mieszkają i tworzą poza jej granicami.

日本には多様なコンテンポラリー・アート・シーンが展開されており、パフォーミング・アートとビジュアルが融合されています。この現状はヨーロッパではほとんど認識されておりません。またそれが根付かないのは、一方でこの展開がステレオタイプや伝統に捕われないものであるのに対し、言語の違いや、日本に対する「お決まりイメージ」が強く意識を支配しているからです。
「ジャパンナウ」演劇祭は東京の劇場主であり演出家である真壁茂夫氏とベルン出身の舞踏家・振り付け師のイムレ・トールマン氏によって、ヨーロッパで様々な日本の現代演劇状況を紹介することを目的として始動しました。
今年、第３回目の「ジャパンナウ」演劇祭がベルン、ベルリン、クラコフで行われます。今までより更にスケールを拡大し、ベルリンに於いてより多くの作品を紹介し、また日本からの団体に加え、ヨーロッパに在住し活躍する日本人アーティストを多数紹介していきます。
